Welsh Surf Kayak Squad and Team Selection Process

The following document explains the criteria by which any Welsh Kayaker with current WCA membership can join the Welsh squad from which the Welsh team is selected.

In exceptional circumstances two ‘Wild Card’ places can be awarded with the discretion of the team captain and team manager and qualified by the CEO and Performance manager of the Welsh Canoeing Association.

Squad Selection

Surf Kayakers wanting a place on the Welsh Surf Kayak Squad will need to be actively competing over the year leading up to international events.

A minimum of three competitions will be required for a WCA ranking. Competitions in any of the UK Home nations will be considered for overall WCA ranking i.e. Wales, England, Scotland, Jersey and Northern Ireland.

N.B. If a competitor only has two ranking competitions they may be considered for a wild card if these two performances are higher overall than those with 3 ranking competitions. If this is the case the wild cards will be issued as outlined above.

IMPORTANT POINT FOR THOSE WISHING TO BE CONSIDERED FOR A PLACE IN THE WELSH SQUAD FROM WHICH THE WELSH TEAM WILL BE SELECTED - PLEASE READ CAREFULLY.

Following the 2007 BCU surf committee decision to have separate home nation ranking lists with only the British Open counting for overall British ranking – Each home nation will be generating it’s own ranking list from competitions held within its borders – in Wales this will be known as the Welsh ranking list.

Team selection will be made from the WCA ranking list will be a combination of the Welsh ranking list PLUS results from any other ranked competitions attended in other UK home nations i.e. English, Scottish or CANI comps.

It is the responsibility of those wishing to be considered for selection onto the Welsh surf squad to register this interest with the Welsh Surf team manager. It is also the responsibility of the individual paddler to inform the team manager and/or the ranking list compiler of the result of any competition attended outside of Wales that they wish to be considered for their WCA ranking status.

Currently (2008) these positions are held by:

Welsh Team Manager – Sid Sinfield sid.sinfield@virgin.net

Ranking list compiler – Richard Berry alstom69@hotmail.com

From this WCA ranking list the top 20 Welsh paddlers will be selected to join the squad. This will break down to:

8 Men

4 Women

4 juniors: To qualify these must be 18 or less on the day of the next World Championships

4 Masters: To qualify these must be over 40 years

A place on the squad will be granted upon confirmation that said paddler can commit to the forthcoming international competition and any team training events.

If there are an insufficient number of paddlers qualifying to paddle in the Long Boat (International) category squad members who have qualifying in Short boat (High Performance) category will also be expected to paddle in the Long boat (International) disciplines.

Team Selection

The squad will then meet over a weekend to be arranged by the current team captain and manager. The Saturday will be a squad training day, followed by a competition overseen/chief judged by the team captain and manager. The outcome of the Sunday competition will be the selection of the Welsh team, broken down as follows:

4 Men with 2 reserves International

4 Men with 2 reserves High Performance

2 Women with 1 reserve

2 Juniors with 1 reserve

2 Masters with 1 reserve

Remaining 5 squad members will remain on stand by in case of unforeseen circumstances.

Team positions will be dependent upon individuals performance over the selection weekend and the decision of the selection panel is final there is no appeals procedure. If the selection weekend cannot be run due to lack of surf the positions will be allocated according to WCA ranking positions only.

Squad members not successful in gaining a place on the Welsh Team would be invited to attend future squad training events in preparation for future international competitions.

Finally any members selected for the Welsh team will be responsible for their compliance with all current Anti Doping Policies of the WCA and BCU and the list of banned substances identified by WADA. It is the responsibility of the individual paddler to be informed and to arrange a Therapeutic Use Exemption Certificate if they are using medication which is contains items covered under the list
