Racing for Wales
Having mastered basic canoeing and kayaking skills, those of a competitive
nature are fortunate because of the range and diversity of competitive canoeing
disciplines. Many disciplines are in some way reflective of a range of other
sports except that they are performed in a canoe or a kayak and on water. Canoe
marathon and sprint racing can be compared to racing on an athletics track.
Competitive kayaking on rough water takes the form of racing against the clock.
Similar to ski racing there are two separate disciplines, one being a straight
timed run (wild water racing), the other being a test of manoeuvrability through
gates (canoe slalom). Canoe polo is very similar to water polo, while freestyle
can be thought of as gymnastics on a river. Surf kayaking is broadly similar to
board surfing on the sea.
